Discover Your College Options Are you graduating from high school or looking to go back to college? There are several things to consider when deciding which college is right for you. One question that every student must ask is, “How much will my degree cost?” Depending upon the destination and the degree (undergraduate or graduate), the answer will vary. Other things to consider are location and the time to complete the degree, which can also add to the overall cost. Scholarship Essay Help It seems more and more scholarship programs are advertising ‘no essay needed’ in an attempt to draw in more applicants. What many students fail to realize is that many of these ‘easy’ programs receive tens of thousands of applications for a single scholarship award. With odds like that, you might as well be playing Mega Money or power ball lottery. I know that creating a winning scholarship essay can seem like an impossible task, and some of you may be intimidated by the high word count required for some scholarship competitions, but submitting an essay just might be your greatest advantage when it comes to winning scholarships. Think about it. If you and another applicant have similar grades and extra-curricular involvements, the essay will likely be the deciding factor. So, how does someone write a great scholarship essay and win that scholarship money? Read the rest of this entry »

I Need a Do-Over Scholarship How many times have you turned in a paper or finished an exam, only to realize moments later that you forgot an important element? Or worse, when is the last time you said something mean or cruel to a friend or family member and then wished immediately that you could take it back? These are moments that scream for a ‘do-over’, but life doesn’t usually work that way. Instead, we have to deal with the consequences (a failing grade on the paper, lost or damaged friendships, etc.) and hope that we learn from our mistakes. But what if you were granted one ‘do-over’ and you could change any moment in your life – would you?

Summer ScholarshipsSummer is my favorite time of the year. I spend my weekends wandering the local farmer’s market gathering fresh fruit and veggies, followed by a relaxing nap in the warm summer sun. There’s so much to do during the summer, too. What you may not know is there are several scholarships attached to these fun summer activities. Most students know about academic scholarships and need-based scholarships, but few realize that working in an ice cream parlor, traveling or even surfing can land you some cool cash, too. Check out this short list of fun summer scholarships just waiting for you.

Lady Justice Recently, a friend of mine announced she would be quitting her job to go to law school. She is a single mom and already holds a bachelor’s degree, but she felt that a law degree would lead to a better paying position and more financial freedom. I have toyed with the idea of a law degree myself because I love the challenge of solving legal questions. Cases are like puzzles, searching for those missing pieces that make the ‘big picture’ come into focus. And, as my mother always reminded me, I love to argue. However, after doing some research, I think the true cost of a law degree might just outweigh the benefits, at least for me.

Cost – If you plan to attend a top tier law school, expect the price tag to be about $150,000. This does not include the cost of your bachelor’s degree, room and board, or other essentials; it’s strictly the tuition for three years. Even an average law school can run you about $40,000 a year. Garduate Debt-Free As you may have heard, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau recently announced that student loan debt has now surpassed the trillion dollar mark. Just last year, students borrowed over $117 billion in federal student loans and we are on track to match or pass that mark again this year; the numbers are sobering.  With the economy still struggling and graduates continuing to have difficulty in finding employment, it’s simply not feasible for students to continue this trend without serious financial ramifications for everyone. But, is it possible to graduate debt-free and reverse this trend? Read the rest of this entry »
