Rarely does a person get an opportunity to address a nation or the world; it’s usually during times of great hardship or war. Even then, few are able to capture our attention for any length of time. It takes a certain skill, but given the right circumstances and speaker, words can start a movement or create change. Words can rally a nation to stand together or they can insight others to take action against injustice. Words can also provide comfort in a time of chaos, such as those spoken by President Bush addressing our nation after 9/11: Read the rest of this entry »
I bet you thought that applying for scholarships was the hardest part of winning free money for college, right? Guess again. Although it does take some time to complete scholarship applications and craft those amazing essays, keeping them can be an even greater responsibility. Unfortunately, life sometimes gets in the way and stuff happens. If you find yourself in the precarious predicament of losing one or more of your scholarships, don’t give up hope just yet. You may be able to salvage your scholarship through a process known as a scholarship appeal. Read the rest of this entry »

Have you ever been out on a Friday night and driven down Danger Road? That’s the street in your town littered with every fast food restaurant imaginable. You know the one; golden arches beckon to you and a certain bell begs you to make a run for the border. The smell of lightly salted French fries wafts in the air and the tingle of carbonated bubbles tickles your nose. Deep down you know it’s bad for you, but it just tastes so good! I usually try to justify my late-night cravings by agreeing to an extra hour or so in the gym, but recently, I have come up with a much more satisfying argument: My cheeseburger is helping other students pay for college. Call me crazy, but if you want to eat your next fast food meal guilt-free, consider visiting some of the following companies the next time you get hungry. Read the rest of this entry »
When I started the college planning process, I never thought about how I was going to pay for it all. Like some students, I assumed my stellar grades and extensive extracurricular activities would automatically have schools throwing money at me. Guess what? That never happened. I quickly found out that there are deadlines and applications involved, and that scoring scholarships can be just as competitive as getting into a college. I certainly wish someone would have given me some advice about what to ask the financial aid office, as it would have made the whole process so much easier. I was clueless about financial aid, how to get it, and how to keep it. To ensure you don’t follow in my footsteps, be sure to ask the financial aid office at each of your prospective colleges the following questions. Read the rest of this entry »
Eleven years ago, I was sitting in my car and stuck in morning traffic. I vividly remember listening to the radio and hearing that a plane had ‘accidentally’ flown into one of the World Trade Center Towers. A few moments later, I walked into the local bowling alley and found everyone hovering around the televisions. No one was moving and their faces were contorted with looks of disbelief and horror. I had assumed a small prop plane had made the mistake of getting too close to the buildings, but I could see from the damage that it was much more serious. As we began debating how a commercial jet could possibly hit one of the towers, another sliced through the other tower. I instantly dropped to my knees and began to sob; it was as if I could hear those innocent souls screaming out for help, but I could do nothing.

Have you ever wondered where Stephenie Meyer got her inspiration for Twilight or how William Shakespeare created such monumental works of art with just a pen? For some, writing just seems to come naturally; their words dance across the page like a ballerina on a stage. And then there are those who sit for hours, stare at a blank page, feel tortured by every syllable, and wait for inspiration to strike. If you count yourself among the latter category, you probably steer clear of writing contests or essay scholarships, but why? One of the best ways to become a better writer is to write more often and there is no time like the present to begin! Here are just a few writing scholarships you can use to improve your writing skills and hopefully bank some college cash along the way. Read the rest of this entry »
Financial aid is a lot like a football game. If you’re unfamiliar with the lingo, it can leave you dazed and confused. Just imagine what it would be like if a coach were to send in a quarterback without giving him a playbook or any tools to create an effective offense. In most cases, he would fail to move the ball. For some students, that’s exactly what has happened during the college planning process; they’ve received their college financial aid applications, but nobody has taken the time to explain what it all means. But don’t throw in the towel just yet. Here are 10 important terms that can help you score a financial aid touchdown! Read the rest of this entry »
