6 Sinfully Good Super Bowl Recipes

Super Bowl RecipesThis weekend, Ray Lewis will play the last game of his football career – the Super Bowl. No matter the outcome, it is sure to be a great game with an emotional conclusion. Although I spent my high school years in San Francisco and cheered on Steve Young, I have to admit that I would love to see Lewis leave on a high note. It’s pretty impressive to have an NFL career that has spanned 17 years, so I think he’s earned the right to go out with a win. The weird thing is that a few years ago, I probably could have cared less about watching the game, let alone who was playing in it. My focus was on feeding the crowd gathered at my house. This year, however, I look forward to yelling at the television alongside my husband and sons, while throwing back some incredible munchies and a few libations. Since my attention will be divided between the living room and the kitchen, my menu will need to be simple. If you also have a crowd to feed, but don’t want to miss any of the action, consider adding a few of these delicious creations to your Super Bowl spread. Continue Reading…

Scholarships for High School Seniors

Scholarships for SeniorsAre you one of those students who waited until your last semester of high school to start looking for college scholarships? Don’t worry, you are not alone. Every year, I encounter students (and parents) who mistakenly believe that scholarships are only available to graduating high school seniors or older students; most are unaware that they could have been applying for and winning scholarships since they were high school freshman. The good news is that there are plenty of opportunities still available, and many programs are specifically for high school seniors, just like you! If you are trying to figure out how you are going to pay for your college tuition this fall, here are some scholarships that may be able to help you reduce the amount of your final bill. College Tuition: Beware of Sticker Shock!

Could you imagine paying over $50,000 a year to attend college? What about $60,000? It may sound crazy, but according to this year’s list of most expensive colleges there are plenty of schools that will set you back a pretty penny. In fact, if you research the Internet, you’ll find dozens of ‘Most Expensive’ or ‘Highest Tuition’ posts and articles, all with figures so high it would cause anyone with chrometophobia (a fear of money) to break out in a cold sweat. Fortunately, many students do not end up paying the full price of admission to these schools. Before you cross any colleges off your list, take a look at the ‘list price’ versus the ‘actual price’ first. Continue Reading…

Remembering MLK: ‘I Have a Dream’ Scholarship

Martin Luther King As a young student, I can remember sitting in my English class listening to a recording of Martin Luther King, Jr. delivering his famous ‘I Have a Dream’ speech. The conviction in his voice reverberated through my body, and I could almost feel what it must have been like to stand among 200,000 protesters, watching as he delivered those immortal words. There was no rally cry for violence, just a simple demand that America make good on a ‘bad check’ and uphold the Constitution’s promise that all men, whether black or white, have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. What I did not know at the time was that the majority of that speech was created on the spot, inspired by a gospel singer named Mahalia Jackson. Continue Reading…

Scholarships for Average Students

Average Student ScholarshipsAre you frustrated by the lack of scholarships that seem to be available to ‘average’ students? You’re not alone. The term ‘average’ indicates that you are the ‘norm’ when it comes to students, which means there are plenty of students just like you, but it often feels as though scholarship providers are only interested in those who score insane numbers on their SAT, have perfect grade point averages, or come from a low-income family. In other words, if there’s nothing ‘special’ about you, you’re out of luck. Thankfully, this is not the case. Although there are many scholarship programs that are merit-based or need-based, there are a slew of other scholarships that are targeted to any student, including those of you who consider yourself average. Here is a sampling of awards that any student, regardless of grades or income, can apply to and possibly win. Continue Reading…
