Phi Theta Kappa

Phi Theta Kappa Provides Scholarships and so Much More!

When I started college in 2004, I enrolled at my local community college. As a working mom, it provided the flexibility I needed and was less expensive than the 4-year colleges in my area. I enjoyed the smaller classes and the opportunity to get to know my professors really well. Soon after my first semester, I received a letter from Phi Theta Kappa congratulating me on my academic success and inviting me to join their honor society. I was unfamiliar with the organization, but after a few inquiries, I soon found that many on campus held the organization in high regard. Intrigued, I decided to attend an upcoming chapter meeting to learn more.

College Textbooks

College Textbooks: Beg, Borrow or Buy?

The one part of college I always disliked was buying my textbooks for the semester. For my pre-law classes, the prices were brutal and I had few opportunities to find a used version of the titles I needed. It didn’t take long for me to realize the insanity of buying new books from the campus bookstore; I would pay anywhere from $50 to nearly $300 a book, but never saw much of that money back at the end of the semester. The books were either not being used the next semester or they were being replaced with a new edition. Even when I did get something for them, it was barely enough to buy lunch. After two semesters of spending over $500 on books, I decided there had to be a better (and cheaper) method. With a little research, I soon found some reliable websites that allowed me to find the very best deals on my textbooks. Here are a few websites that I found easy to use and also offered great deals.

Study Abroad Scholarships

Study Abroad Scholarships for Undergraduate Students

One thing I regret not doing while I was in college was taking the opportunity to study abroad. Many students in my French class jumped at the chance to stay in Strasbourg for six weeks, immersing themselves in the language and culture. I would have loved to tag along, but my family obligations and bank account made the trip impractical for me, or so I thought. Of course, now that I realize how many financial aid resources there were for study abroad opportunities, I could just kick myself in the pants.

It never dawned on me to check with my French professor to see if the language department offered any scholarships or grants (they did!) or even the financial aid office. I just assumed that any education I received off campus would have to be paid for through my own personal piggy bank. I later found out that some of the college departments (music, business and engineering) even provided additional scholarships to students traveling outside the United States.

Money for Dad

Celebrate Father’s Day With These Scholarships for Dads!

Before I became an impossible teenager, I was daddy’s little girl. I could count on him to take my side in any argument and he was always there to save me when I bit off more than I could chew. Most importantly, he made me feel as though I could do anything. Looking back, I realize that he made many personal sacrifices to make sure I had everything I needed or wanted. Instead of buying his dream car, he put that money into guitar and piano lessons for me. When he considered taking golf lessons, he put them on hold so I could attend a vocal competition in California with my school. I’m sure there were other dreams he put on hold, as well, to ensure his family was happy and secure.

Father’s Day is just around the corner and I would give anything to be able to thank my dad for everything he has done for me, but unfortunately, he passed away several years ago. If you know a dad who has put his educational dreams on hold and is now considering returning to school or even attending college for the first time, be sure to let him know how much he means to you and show him some support by sharing these scholarships with him.
