All You Can EatIf you’re a foodie, you probably look forward to the winter holidays with much anticipation. There’s Labor Day, which my family celebrates with a huge barbeque and pie cook-off, and of course Halloween, the kids’ favorite holiday. It’s the one day that no matter how hard I try, I can’t resist sending myself into a sugar coma. November isn’t much better. Last year, at Thanksgiving, I counted over 30 different food items on our table, and yes, I tried every one of them. As soon as my stomach starts to settle, there’s Christmas and New Year’s Eve; just another excuse to shovel copious amounts of food into my belly. All those holidays usually lead to the annual New Year’s resolution of going on a diet and eating healthier, but I can only tolerate leafy greens and water for so long. Thankfully, today is International No Diet Day.  This means I get a free pass from my restricted menu for 24 hours…and believe me, I plan to use it! If you are a foodie like me, here are just a few of the places you can visit to celebrate this gastric occasion. Read the rest of this entry »

Super Bowl RecipesThis weekend, Ray Lewis will play the last game of his football career – the Super Bowl. No matter the outcome, it is sure to be a great game with an emotional conclusion. Although I spent my high school years in San Francisco and cheered on Steve Young, I have to admit that I would love to see Lewis leave on a high note. It’s pretty impressive to have an NFL career that has spanned 17 years, so I think he’s earned the right to go out with a win. The weird thing is that a few years ago, I probably could have cared less about watching the game, let alone who was playing in it. My focus was on feeding the crowd gathered at my house. This year, however, I look forward to yelling at the television alongside my husband and sons, while throwing back some incredible munchies and a few libations. Since my attention will be divided between the living room and the kitchen, my menu will need to be simple. If you also have a crowd to feed, but don’t want to miss any of the action, consider adding a few of these delicious creations to your Super Bowl spread. Read the rest of this entry »

Student DiscountsI can remember counting down the days to my high school graduation. I couldn’t wait to go off to college and live on my own. When I stepped on campus, it was everything I had hoped for and more. I finally had the freedom to choose my own classes and I could sleep in on weekends, but I was also on my own when it came to paying for everything. I really wasn’t prepared for how expensive college life was. I knew I had to budget for tuition, housing, and fees, but the everyday items, like toothpaste and laundry detergent, really added up. You never really think about all those little expenses when you’re at home and can simply grab something from the pantry or bathroom closet. Luckily, being a college student also gives you access to something else – discounts! Read the rest of this entry »

Cheap Christmas Gifts Can you believe that Christmas is just a week away? It seems like only yesterday I was baking pies and stuffing a turkey. No matter how many times I promise to get a head start on my holiday shopping, it seems like something always derails those plans; whether it’s not enough time or not enough money in my piggy bank, I never seem to get it done. So, here I am again, desperately trying to throw together some nice gifts on a shoestring budget before it’s too late. Thank goodness for Pinterest, and all those wonderfully creative people who share their ideas, or I would be up a proverbial creek without a paddle. If you’re like me, and have waited until the last minute to pick up something for those on your holiday list, consider one of these easy gifts you can make yourself for next to nothing. Fast Food Scholarships Have you ever been out on a Friday night and driven down Danger Road? That’s the street in your town littered with every fast food restaurant imaginable. You know the one; golden arches beckon to you and a certain bell begs you to make a run for the border. The smell of lightly salted French fries wafts in the air and the tingle of carbonated bubbles tickles your nose. Deep down you know it’s bad for you, but it just tastes so good! I usually try to justify my late-night cravings by agreeing to an extra hour or so in the gym, but recently, I have come up with a much more satisfying argument: My cheeseburger is helping other students pay for college. Call me crazy, but if you want to eat your next fast food meal guilt-free, consider visiting some of the following companies the next time you get hungry. Read the rest of this entry »

volunteers During college, you may desire to live the party life and have your focus set on the three F’s: Food, Fridays & Fun! However, you can get all those goodies and more by volunteering at a local food bank, school, or homeless shelter.

Based on a report issued by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, individuals with higher levels of educational attainment are more likely to volunteer. In 2010, 42.3 percent of college graduates volunteered. Moreover, you are not alone in the community service movement. Young people, like you, are making a difference across this nation. You may even want to discuss your service with others at the National Conference on Volunteering and Service in New Orleans on June 6-8, 2011.

Think about how you can serve your community, and then review the benefits that volunteering will have on your life. Read the rest of this entry »
