You may have even seen a few of them stumbling around your campus. Just look for the students with bloodshot eyes or those who may be pulling out their hair by the handful. Honestly, they should have put more time and effort into their college planning tasks, but not all is lost. There are still plenty of college scholarships with upcoming deadlines that students can apply to right now. February has always been one of my favorite months; I get to celebrate my birthday, wedding anniversary and Valentine’s Day all in the same week, which means tons of presents and dinner out. Do I believe in werewolves or vampires? Not really. Zombies, however, are a different story; there’s evidence of them everywhere. You know that brooding math teacher who mumbles under his breath every time someone gives the wrong answer? He’s probably a zombie. What about those suspicious lunch ladies who serve that weird purple goo they claim is gravy? Yeah, they are definitely part of the walking dead. Even our parents show signs of being infected. Don’t believe me? Try getting them to make any sense when you call them at 2 a.m. for a ride. Slurred speech, incoherent language and the dark circles around their eyes – they are totally turning into the undead! Even the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is preparing for the zombie apocalypse, so it has to be real. Do yourself a favor and start planning for your survival now. Have you ever applied to a scholarship and were absolutely sure you would win? Let me give you some advice; don’t count your chickens before they hatch! Sure, when I first started applying for scholarships, I was a bit cocky and secretively thought people would start throwing money my way because of my grades and obvious talent, but that’s not quite how it panned out. In fact, I applied to 25 scholarships before I ever won my first award. What was I doing wrong? As it turns out, nothing; you just have to understand that many scholarship programs are subjective, especially those that include an essay. Read the rest of this entry »

In a few short days, total strangers will be shoving and clawing their way through retailers looking for the best Black Friday deals this year. Sure, Target and Walmart have some awesome deals, like an Xbox bundle for $99 or an LED television for $78, but am I willing to give up time with my family to ensure I snag one of these coveted gifts? I can think of a much better way to spend my evening – like searching for scholarships! Think about it, not only can you do it in the comfort of your own home; you can get your family to help you out, too. Okay, who am I kidding? Grandpa will be snoring in his recliner, dad will hog the couch, and mom will be looking for recruits to help wash the dishes. So, use scholarships as your full-proof excuse for getting out of clean-up duty! I’ve even put together a list of Black Friday programs that will disappear (along with all the great sales) after this weekend, just in case mom asks for some evidence!
