Are you frustrated by the lack of scholarships that seem to be available to ‘average’ students? You’re not alone. The term ‘average’ indicates that you are the ‘norm’ when it comes to students, which means there are plenty of students just like you, but it often feels as though scholarship providers are only interested in those who score insane numbers on their SAT, have perfect grade point averages, or come from a low-income family. In other words, if there’s nothing ‘special’ about you, you’re out of luck. Thankfully, this is not the case. Although there are many scholarship programs that are merit-based or need-based, there are a slew of other scholarships that are targeted to any student, including those of you who consider yourself average. Here is a sampling of awards that any student, regardless of grades or income, can apply to and possibly win.
Maybe your grades aren’t spectacular because you spent a lot of time daydreaming in class or sleeping late on the weekends. Great news, this scholarship is for you! Just share one of your weird, funny or inspirational dreams and it could earn you free money for college. One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded. Any U.S. student, 13 years or older, may apply. Deadline: January 31.
2. Cappex Easy Money Scholarship
The people at Cappex understand that you are more than just a test score or the grades on your transcript, so they put together this fun $1,000 scholarship for average students just like you. Any current high school or college student may submit an entry. Deadline: Last day of every month.
3. The Average Student Scholarship Contest
CollegeHumor is seriously fed up with all the scholarships for brainy students or those with amazing talents, and they are putting their money where their mouth is – literally! This year, they will provide two (2) $5,000 scholarships to average students. Simply submit an essay explaining how you are average and upload a few pictures showing your average life. Any U.S. college student, 18 years or older, can apply. Deadline: February 1.
Being average doesn’t mean you can’t make a difference in this world; it just takes the desire to help others. The Christophers is offering eight scholarships, valued between $100 and $1,000, to the student who best illustrates that one person can change the world for the better. Just submit your poster for a chance to win! The contest is open to U.S. and international students in grades nine through twelve. Deadline: February 21.
Every week, Zinch gives away $1,000 to the student who best answers that week’s short essay prompt. Sometimes the question is serious and sometimes it is funny. Just be sure to check back every Monday afternoon for a new question and another chance to win. Any U.S. high school or college student may apply. Deadline: Monday at 11 a.m. PT each week.
Being average shouldn’t deter you from following your college dreams. Just remember that you are in good company and that the world is inhabited by more average people than those who may be labeled ‘special.’ Hold your head high, embrace your normal life, and enjoy. Besides, you’ll probably be the one with all the great college stories to tell your kids, instead of the student who goes bald at 20 from stress. Now that is what I call karma!
