It seems there are many scholarships available for those seeking undergraduate degrees. This is wonderful for those who wish to get bachelor’s degrees and then enter the workforce, but what about students who want to pursue advanced degrees? Not only are the credit hour fees typically much higher for graduate level courses, but it often seems like the opportunities for graduate scholarships are all but impossible to find. Coming up with a way to pay for graduate school can be very discouraging for those who cannot afford to take out additional student loans, and may even cause students to think twice about pursuing a master’s degree or a doctorate degree. But, don’t give up hope quite yet. I’ve done a little research for you and found the following programs which can be used for graduate school and the pursuit of an advanced degree.

Seed Companies Scholarship: Open to U.S. and international students who are studying at a U.S. or Canadian college. Applicants must be pursuing a career in the seed industry (research, marketing, sales, etc.) and have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher. Value: $500 – $2,000. Deadline: May 1, 2012.

Feldman Fellowship: This program is available to U.S. students who are pursuing a graduate degree in journalism. Applicants must submit three letters of recommendation, financial documentation and undergraduate transcripts. Applicants are also encouraged to include samples of their writing. Value: $5,000. Deadline: May 1, 2012.

All About Education Scholarship: U.S. students (ages 13 and up) may apply for this short essay scholarship, including those pursuing graduate degrees. Applicants are judged solely on their responses to the essay question: How would $3,000 make a difference in your life? Value: $3,000. Deadline: April 30, 2012.

NSHMBA Scholarship Program: The National Society of Hispanic MBAs provides hundreds of scholarships annually to U.S. students of Hispanic heritage. Each applicant must be pursuing a master’s degree in business management or business administration and must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Value: $2,500 – $10,000. Deadline: May 2, 2012.

These are just a few of the scholarships that are available to graduate students, and they have deadlines approaching in the next few weeks. There are also graduate level awards for those pursuing degrees in law, medicine and other fields. While graduate scholarships may be more difficult to locate, keep in mind that you can also find funding through writing competitions and other contests and competitions that do not restrict funding to undergraduate degrees. Start your search early for scholarships, grants and other contests so you can significantly reduce the student loan debt you may incur while pursing an advanced degree.

I am a graduate student going into engineering, and find that scholarships are fairly scarce for my field of study. Thanks for this list, I’ll try a few of them out.
