Confucius Says, “Try Your Luck With Scholarships!”

September 29 is Confucius Day. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Confucius, he was one of the first great philosophers. Born in China during 551 B.C., Confucius was a teacher, a politician, and a scholar. Throughout his life, he gave us nearly 500 famous sayings. Many of these can now be found in fortune cookies, but there was one lost nugget of advice that we stumbled upon while researching this wise man — Confucius says, “Try your luck with scholarships!” Who knew that he would have the foresight to encourage high school and college students to search for free money for college? We can only guess that getting an education back then literally cost an arm and a leg. Thank goodness students today don’t have to give a pound of flesh to earn their diploma, but it’s still a fairly expensive endeavor. With this in mind, we pay homage to Confucius by providing this short list of easy scholarships that require nothing more than just a bit of luck to win.

Scare Up Some Money With These October Scholarships

Ghosts, goblins, and zombies — oh, my! There’s nothing quite like the month of October to bring out your inner ghoul. If you’re a Walking Dead fan, we know you are eagerly counting down the days until the season premiere on October 12, but there’s also an abundance of horror movies on television to entertain and torture you throughout the month. And, even if you secretly cower under your blankets, you know it’s futile to resist; this month will be filled with screams of terror. Of course, if you really want a good scare, you could simply look at your college tuition bill. No amount of wooden stakes or silver bullets will make that disappear. But, there is one thing you can arm yourself with that might help vanquish it — scholarships! So, grab your computer and start applying soon because these October scholarships have a shorter shelf life than a vampire waiting to meet the sun.

Scholarships for the Working Joe (or Jane!)

In recognition of Labor Day, we wanted to take a moment to pay homage to those who contribute to the health and well-being of our nation on a daily basis. You know who were are talking about; the average working Joe or Jane who does what’s needed to ensure his or her family is provided for and our communities continue to run efficiently.  These hardworking citizens include postal and sanitation workers, law enforcement personnel, teachers, construction workers, nurses, and even those smiling people behind the deli counter who make your sandwich every afternoon. Without them, our lives wouldn’t be the same. That’s why this Labor Day holiday we’ve decided to highlight a few scholarship programs that are specifically for those who currently work in or are planning a career in these fields.

Five Scholarships for Bookworms

Did you know that August 9 is National Book Lover’s Day? It’s the perfect excuse to find a soft spot and read your favorite novel. Personally, my favorite place to get lost in a book is a warm bath, but it doesn’t come without some dangers. I have been known to doze off and drop my book in the water, or get so wrapped up in the story that I forget how long I have been in the tub. I usually snap back to reality when I start to shiver from the cold water and my toes have turned to prunes. Books are a wonderful way to escape, especially when you need a break from school or work. They can transport you to an alien world or bring back memories long forgotten. There’s something soothing about feeling the worn edges of a favorite book slip between your fingers. Of course, most people now consume their literature electronically, but that doesn’t lessen the power of the written word. And now, there’s an additional benefit to being a bonafide bookworm…scholarships! If you have a true thirst for reading, you can turn the pages of these books into another kind of paper — free money for college.

Say Goodbye to Summer With These August Scholarships

One more month. That’s it. It’s really hard to believe that the summer will soon be coming to an end. Where did the time go? It’s seems like only yesterday that students were taking final exams, enjoying proms, and looking forward to summer break. In just a few short weeks, many of those same students will be starting new lives on college campuses, and a new flock of high school seniors will launch head-first into the college admissions game. Incoming high school freshmen will eagerly begin their journeys, as well. No matter which stage students find themselves at this fall, one thing is for certain — now is the time to apply for scholarships! If they commit to completing one scholarship per day, students could realistically apply for 30 or more scholarships before classes begin. To help them meet this challenge, I have compiled a list of 10 August scholarships that don’t require too much work, and are open to a variety of students.
