We The Students Scholarship Program

Have you been following the Michael Brown case? Of course you have. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, it’s nearly impossible not to see something about it on television or social media. Many people are upset with the Grand Jury’s decision not to indict, but there are also those who have read the evidence and agree with the findings. Unfortunately, some have turned to violence and crime to express their frustration, which is not a constructive way to start a dialogue or bring about change. There is, however, a more creative (and safe) environment for you to defend your position, whether it is for or against the Grand Jury’s decision.

Add These December Scholarships to Your Wish List!

What new gadgets and toys will make your holiday wish list this year? Maybe you’re dreaming of the new iPhone 6 or one of those curved smart TVs. You might even be adventurous enough to ask for a trip to Europe, but there’s something else you probably should consider adding, as well — money for college. Yeah, we know it’s not fun to think about saving money, but it really will be appreciated when those college tuition bills start rolling in. And, it’s definitely better than getting another polka dot sweater from your grandmother (seriously, stop buying these!). Even if you have a huge extended family, you may still fall short of receiving enough money to help cover all your expenses next semester. That’s where we come in. Although we’d love to give you (and everyone else) a present this year, it’s simply not possible. So, we’re doing the next best thing and wrapping up this list of December scholarships just for you!

world kindness day

Be Rewarded for Your Kindness to Others

On this date in 1997, a small collection of humanitarian groups got together and started what is now known as World Kindness Day — a single day of the year (November 13) when everyone is encouraged to do something for someone else. It doesn’t have to be something monumental, either. Sure, you could collect clothes for the homeless or start a toy drive for children this holiday season, but something as simple as saying “hello” to a stranger counts, too. Just think of all the moments in your day where one small gesture could make a huge difference in someone’s life; such as that girl sitting alone at lunch, who may be reaching her breaking point, but a few minutes of your time sharing a meal could be all she needs to see a light in the darkness. Or maybe, holding the door open for an elderly person would demonstrate that courtesy and kindness still exists. You could even surprise a few people by paying for their coffee in the drive-thru at Starbucks on your way into class or work. The possibilities are endless.

It is said that money can’t buy happiness, but it sure can make paying for college a heck of a lot easier. That’s why it’s so important for high school sophomores to get their feet wet when it comes to the scholarship search process. Very few students are lucky enough to win an award on their very first attempt. In fact, it can take several applications before students figure out how to write a winning scholarship essay or how to secure the perfect letters of recommendation. If students wait until senior year to start applying for scholarships, it not only reduces their opportunities for winning awards, but it can also increase their stress levels. By setting aside time each month to work on scholarships during their sophomore year, students can build their confidence while building their financial aid nest egg. To get them started, we have put together a list of 10 scholarships for high school sophomores that are currently accepting applications this fall.
