Scouting Scholarships

It Pays to Be a Boy Scout…Literally!

Who knew that getting lost in the fog would result in an organization that today includes over 2.6 million members between the ages of seven and seventeen? For those of you unfamiliar with the story, the Boy Scouts of America actually began after William D. Boyce lost his way in the fog during a trip to London. A young Boy Scout helped him find his way home, and Boyce was so impressed by his character that he worked to bring the Scouting organization to the United States. On February 8, the organization will celebrate its 104th anniversary, and to mark the occasion I have gathered a list of scholarship opportunities for those who have taken the pledge to keep themselves physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.

February Scholarships

Fall in Love With These February Scholarships!

February is such a polarizing month; you either love it or you hate it. I fall on the ‘love’ side of the fence. As a young girl, I enjoyed getting valentines in elementary school. In high school, I waited patiently to see if Cupid (usually some hot senior) would deliver roses to my homeroom class. College, of course, was a whole, new level of crazy; ambitious young men would go above and beyond to impress us girls. Off-key serenades in the dormitory courtyard, giant banners hanging from buildings, or a 10-pound bar of chocolate were not unheard of on campus during the flirty month of February. Thinking back, I would have much rather received something a bit more tangible…like a college scholarship. Wrap a $5,000 check with a bow and I would have been yours for life – or at least until the end of the semester. If you prefer green over gold, or cash over carnations, check out this lovely list of February scholarships just waiting for their prefect match.

MLK Scholarships

Keeping the Dream Alive Through MLK Jr. Scholarships

On August 28, 1963, more than 250,000 people converged on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. to hear Martin Luther King, Jr. deliver his now infamous “I Have a Dream’” speech. It is one of the most acclaimed orations in our country’s history, and helped define the American Civil Rights Movement. Unfortunately, five decades later, we are still fighting for equality and acceptance for all, regardless of color, gender, religion, or sexual orientation. Yes, there have been steps in the right direction, but we still have a long way to go. Thankfully, there are many organizations and schools that continue to support Dr. King’s vision, and recognize underrepresented students who have taken the extraordinary step not only to pursue a higher education, but also work toward keeping Dr. King’s dream alive.  Here are just a few of the many wonderful scholarships and programs that promote equality, and help financially support students who embody Dr. King’s values and spirit of inclusion.

Celebrate ‘Do Nothing Day’ With These Easy Scholarships

Did you know that January 16 is National Do Nothing Day? The day was first proposed in 1972 by Harold Pullman Coffin, a columnist, and is meant to provide a day where we don’t celebrate, honor, or observe anything. Unfortunately, every seven years it winds up coinciding with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, so there goes that idea. Besides, aren’t we completely usurping the point of the day by making it a nationally recognized day? In any case, if you’d like to ‘un-celebrate’ Do Nothing Day, I have a few scholarships that require very little work or nothing at all to enter. Who Knows? Your total lack of effort could be rewarded with some sweet college cash.
