Scholarship Wish List

December Scholarship Wish List

This past weekend, my kids were begging me to bring all the Christmas decorations down from the attic. Personally, I just can’t see decorating before I’ve had the chance to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner, but this year it seems to be taking a backseat. It could be that Thanksgiving falls so late in November that everyone is already thinking ahead and getting a jump on his or her holiday planning; I know my kids started making out their Christmas wish lists weeks ago. There’s the inevitable request for the new PS4 and the games to go with it, but my daughter, who typically leans toward clothes and cosmetics, wants a retro record player this year. I find it amusing that she thinks it’s so cool to play vinyl albums to hear the ‘raw’ sound of music, when it really wasn’t that long ago that they were tossed aside for CDs. Oh well, what’s old is new again, I guess. I just hope parachute pants never make a comeback. Anyway, it got me thinking about other things that should be on her wish list, especially now that she nearing the end of her junior year in high school. One thing that should definitely make her list (or any student’s) is scholarships. Luckily, there are tons of programs with deadlines in December. If you know some students, naughty or nice, who could use some college cash, be sure to share this scholarship wish list with them.

7 Scholarships for Your Unique Talents

Did you know that November 24 is ‘Celebrate Your Unique Talent Day?’ We all have something that makes us special; some of us can remember long sequences of numbers (not me) or eat spaghetti with our toes (again, not me!). The point is, now is the time to embrace those things that set you apart from everyone else and celebrate your special qualities. Oh, and by the way, did you know that those ‘weird’ and ‘unique’ talents could also score you some free college cash? It’s true! In fact, here are some of the scholarships currently being offered to those who have unusual skills and talents.

Scholarships That Are as Satisfying as Pumpkin Pie!

Can you believe that the fall semester is nearly over already? In a few weeks, you’ll be enjoying Thanksgiving and hopefully taking a much-needed break from your school assignments. Of course, if you’re a high school senior, this is a prime opportunity to get caught up with your college admissions applications and start working on scholarships. Any current college student is likely to tell you that there never seems to be enough money to cover all the expenses that pop up during the semester. For those who still have a few years left in high school, don’t waste the holiday break snoozing on the couch or filling up on pumpkin pie; instead, set aside a few hours to get a jump on your college scholarship search. The early bird may get the worm, but it’s the early student who wins the scholarship! Here are a few scholarships with upcoming deadlines to get you started.

Make a Difference Day

Make a Difference Day Could Lead to College Cash

This Saturday, many secondary schools and colleges will be celebrating Make a Difference Day by encouraging their students to participate in volunteer activities and other events that seek to support their communities. It’s a great opportunity for students to give back, but also a chance for them to earn potential college scholarships. Many state programs, as well as some private scholarships, now require a minimum number of community service hours to compete for college cash. For some students, the thought of working for free or carving out time in their already hectic schedules may not seem all that appealing, but I would encourage them to make the time.

October Scholarships

Spooktacular Scholarships with October Deadlines

October has always held a special place in my heart. It’s the time of year when Mother Nature turns my backyard into this amazing palette of color and the stores are covered in a blanket of pink. My weekends are packed with walks and other breast cancer awareness events, and I begin the process of transforming my mundane home into a haunted mansion. Soon, fat pumpkins with menacing grins will adorn my doorstep, warning visitors to beware. Although October is full of frivolity, it’s also one of the best months for you to ‘carve out’ some time for scholarships. There are many fall programs available to high school and college students, but just like ghosts, they will evaporate soon.
