Can you believe that school will be out in just a few short weeks? I don’t know about you, but it seems like only yesterday I was enjoying the warm rays of summer and now I’m bundling up to stave off the cold winds of winter. Burrr! Although I love the holidays, it’s also a stark reminder that school will be over before you know it. But, before you head off to visit family or start your Christmas shopping, don’t forget one important task on your college to-do list…Scholarships! Now is the perfect time to sit down and complete your essays and applications, but where should you start? Unfortunately, Santa can’t help you in this department, so I’ve put together a list of 10 scholarships you can start working on right now.

Have you noticed all the Christmas decorations going up in stores lately? Heck, even Santa Claus has already set up shop in my local mall. It seems as though November is quickly becoming the new December. Before we get ‘wrapped’ up in the Christmas spirit, let’s not forget that November is a time to thank military veterans for their service to our country and a time to gather for the Thanksgiving meal. For my family, Thanksgiving has always been a cherished tradition of stuffing our faces, watching football and taking a long afternoon nap. But before we devour mom’s glorious turkey, we also take a few moments to express what we are thankful for this past year. As a college graduate, that list has often included scholarships (I am definitely grateful for having less student loan debt!). So, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I’m providing you with some tasty scholarships that are available right now. Just be sure to set aside some time to complete their applications before the month ends, or you’ll feel like a turkey for letting this money slip through your hands! Read the rest of this entry »
October has always been one of my favorite months; the temperature starts to cool, the leaves begin to change color, and my favorite pumpkin treats starting popping up everywhere! It’s also one of the busiest months of the year for charity fundraisers and awareness events. October hosts Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Lupus Awareness Month, National Diabetes Month, and Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Phew! That’s a lot of walks and runs. Of course, most children (and some of us adults too!) are also interested in another celebration this month…Halloween! Everywhere I turn, a Reese’s peanut butter cup or Sugar Daddy is staring me in the face. Good thing I have all those charity events to help burn off the calories. With everything that is going on this month, it’s pretty easy to get sidetracked and neglect some of the other important tasks in our lives…like finding scholarships. So, consider the following list of October scholarships my treat to you! Read the rest of this entry »
Rarely does a person get an opportunity to address a nation or the world; it’s usually during times of great hardship or war. Even then, few are able to capture our attention for any length of time. It takes a certain skill, but given the right circumstances and speaker, words can start a movement or create change. Words can rally a nation to stand together or they can insight others to take action against injustice. Words can also provide comfort in a time of chaos, such as those spoken by President Bush addressing our nation after 9/11: Read the rest of this entry »
Have you ever wondered where Stephenie Meyer got her inspiration for Twilight or how William Shakespeare created such monumental works of art with just a pen? For some, writing just seems to come naturally; their words dance across the page like a ballerina on a stage. And then there are those who sit for hours, stare at a blank page, feel tortured by every syllable, and wait for inspiration to strike. If you count yourself among the latter category, you probably steer clear of writing contests or essay scholarships, but why? One of the best ways to become a better writer is to write more often and there is no time like the present to begin! Here are just a few writing scholarships you can use to improve your writing skills and hopefully bank some college cash along the way. Read the rest of this entry »
As we slip into the dog days of summer, when you can literally see the steam rising from the street after an afternoon shower, my mind can’t help but wander. I can still remember playing in the sprinklers on a hot summer day as a child, listening for the music of the neighborhood ice cream truck and running after it for my favorite treat. While my days of chasing the Good Humor man may be over, my love of ice cream still remains. That’s why I love July, otherwise known as National Ice Cream Month. This is a great time for you to indulge in your sweet tooth and sample the vast array of flavors available for any discerning palette. Personally, I cannot resist a waffle cone filled with Bruster’s Mint Chocolate Chip. Those tiny boulders of chocolate heaven mixed into a sea of minty dreaminess still make me feel like a child on a hot summer’s day.

Have you ever fantasized about being a superhero? I’ll admit that there has been more than one occasion where I have dreamed of flying at lightening fast speeds across the sky and possessing superhuman strength — especially when trying to open a jar of peanut butter. On the other hand, I can also see myself slithering into a leather bodysuit and wielding a bullwhip against my sworn enemies. Of course, with my luck, I’d probably end up hitting myself in the face and looking like Indiana Jones…ouch! Read the rest of this entry »
