How many times have you turned in a paper or finished an exam, only to realize moments later that you forgot an important element? Or worse, when is the last time you said something mean or cruel to a friend or family member and then wished immediately that you could take it back? These are moments that scream for a ‘do-over’, but life doesn’t usually work that way. Instead, we have to deal with the consequences (a failing grade on the paper, lost or damaged friendships, etc.) and hope that we learn from our mistakes. But what if you were granted one ‘do-over’ and you could change any moment in your life – would you?

The introduction of the Internet has changed many things in our lives, such as how and where we access information. Not too long ago, students wandered through aisles of books in a building called a library and used a manual card catalog system to locate items on the shelves. They sat in beanbag chairs hunched over their favorite novels or snuggled into comfy couches to read. Now, everything is digital and a great majority of us get our information from the world-wide web. Visits to the library have become rare, especially after the invention of the Kindle and the Nook. We can now access our favorite stories anywhere at any time.
Although how we access books has changed, many of us still pursue our love of reading. Did you know that getting lost in a book might actually help you win a scholarship? It’s true. There are scholarship programs out there for avid readers, as well as those who love to write novels and stories too. Read the rest of this entry »
I love this time of year; the weather gets cooler, the leaves change color and there’s a feeling of fun in the air. It’s also the time of the year when everyone gets to be a kid again. Some people dress up, play pranks and act just plain silly. Halloween allows others to channel their inner ghouls and goblins, and for a while, lets them believe that magic does exist. For some, this feeling remains throughout the year. So, in honor of Halloween, let’s look at a few whacky scholarships that reward those who keep the spirit of Halloween alive year-round.
Are you a fan of Star Trek? Planning to go to this year’s Halloween party as Spock, Captain Kirk or a Klingon? Well, if you live and breathe all things related to Star Trek, you may just win a scholarship for college too! The Kor Memorial Scholarship provides a $500 award to an international or U.S. undergraduate or graduate student that is completing a degree in language study (including Klingon). Remember your P.E. class from grade school? You’re standing in line, waiting to be picked for the team, and what does the captain do? He or she picks the bigger students because it is presumed they will perform better or have more to offer. The same presumption often occurs with scholarship searches: the larger awards get all the attention, while the ‘little guys’ may see only a few dozen applications.
This assumption is a mistake many students also make when searching and applying for scholarships. While the smaller programs may only offer $100, $250 or $500 as an award, a scholarship-savvy student will realize that by winning several of these awards, the total amount can really add up. The other upside of smaller awards is that they are often disbursed directly to the student and not the college. This means you can use the funds for food, clothing, gas or whatever else you may need at college.
Here’s a sampling of some smaller awards available now: Read the rest of this entry »
Just about everyone knows that October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Everywhere you look, you see pink: grocery stores, clothing retailers and even the National Football League. But, did you realize that October is also a ‘green’ month? It’s true! October is Energy Awareness Month, a time to look at alternative methods to creating and using energy resources on our planet and in our daily lives.
Most students have probably had the opportunity to participate in some form of recycling or ‘green’ campaign at school. You may have even started to ‘go green’ at home: reducing energy consumption, wasting less water and recycling your trash. If you are concerned about the effects of global warming and the depletion of our natural resources, you may be excited to learn that many companies and organizations are ready to reward you for your commitment to the environment and your community. Take a look at some programs that reward students for ‘going green’ by putting a little extra green in your pockets for college. Read the rest of this entry »
Each year, as students begin the process of applying to college, many come face-to-face with the harsh reality of what it actually costs to earn a degree. Some may have an inkling of how the expenses add up (tuition, room & board, lab fees, books and more), but most don’t really grasp the total cost until they receive their college financial aid letters. Hopefully, you have some college savings stashed away, and maybe you began your search for scholarships as soon as you entered high school with the help of a free scholarship matching service like ScholarshipExperts.com. If not, we hope you haven’t pinned all your paying-for-college hopes on just one source: the ever-elusive full-ride scholarship.
Don’t get us wrong…full-ride scholarships do exist; but it appears that there are only about 20,000 full-ride awards provided by colleges each year. If there are 20.4 million students attending college in the United States, that means only about 1% of all college students receive institutional full-ride scholarships each year (National Center for Education Statistics, 2009). September is Women of Achievement month. It’s time to pause and think about all the amazing women that have helped to change and shape the world: Marie Curry, Susan B. Anthony, Amelia Earhart and more. Because these women were educated and passionate about life, they were able to make important contributions during their lifetimes.
It’s also time to stop and think about how we can encourage those around us to become Women of Achievement in today’s society…and it typically begins with education. Despite the pressures and demands that women regularly juggle with work and families, women are finding time to attend college and expand their knowledge. Pursuing a post-secondary degree in addition to meeting the demands of a career while raising a family might seem impossible, but trust us, the rewards of a college education far outweigh the sacrifices one will make for a few short years.
