Every year, there are tons of posts about weird scholarships. There’s the Stuck at Prom Scholarship where students make their outfits from Duck Tape®, and let’s not forget the duck calling scholarship, which has been mentioned so many times it’s just not weird anymore. Of course, no list is ever complete without adding the Kor Memorial Scholarship, simply because those who speak Klingon can use their talent to win it, although it’s not the only language eligible for the award. Last year, ScholarshipExperts.com jumped into the fray with the Zombie Apocalypse and Flavor of the Month scholarships. If you’re a fan of The Walking Dead, the zombie scholarship was made for you. Of course, I personally love the Flavor of Month because I have an excuse to sample ice cream. I haven’t found anything called ‘A Hot Mess’ yet, so my search continues. Now, ScholarshipExperts.com has done it again and launched a totally new scholarship that may just be the weirdest award I have ever seen. Read the rest of this entry »
The first day of April is always interesting in my house. I have four kids, so they find it amusing to ‘punk’ mom throughout the day. Even waking up can be fraught with peril; I never know if I will be covered in some sticky mess or step into something disgusting. I’m not sure how April Fools’ Day started, but my children have embraced it as a day where even their most outrageous pranks will receive amnesty. They don’t know it yet, but one day (many years from now) I will be helping my grandchildren exact some serious payback. I could start by telling my daughter I lost her college fund while playing poker, but that seems a bit too cruel. Besides, saving (and finding) money for college is no laughing matter, unless you apply for these funny, and a bit weird, scholarships. Read the rest of this entry »
When I tell you there are scholarships for just about everything, I’m not stretching the truth. Do you crochet or knit? There’s a scholarship for that! Think you could survive a zombie apocalypse? Yep, there’s a scholarship for that, too. You already know that students can win scholarships for academics and sports, but did you know that you could win free money for college just for being born? Every year, someone publishes a list of weird or wacky scholarships, but it always seems like the same scholarships are listed year after year. The list is bound to include the Kor Memorial Scholarship (popular with those who speak Klingon), the Stuck at Prom Scholarship (Duck Tape) and, of course, the infamous duck calling scholarship (otherwise known as the Chick and Sophie Major Memorial Duck Calling Contest). In fact, these so-called wacky scholarships have become so well-known that they no longer qualify as ‘weird’ in my book. So, we scoured the Web looking for something truly new and unique; we wanted to find programs that require an unusual hobby, career or characteristic to add to our annual list. Here are the programs made our Truly Weird Scholarships List.
1. Zombie Apocalypse Scholarship
There’s been so much media attention surrounding Zombies that not even a statement from the CDC has been able to assuage the masses. Read the rest of this entry »
I love this time of year; the weather gets cooler, the leaves change color and there’s a feeling of fun in the air. It’s also the time of the year when everyone gets to be a kid again. Some people dress up, play pranks and act just plain silly. Halloween allows others to channel their inner ghouls and goblins, and for a while, lets them believe that magic does exist. For some, this feeling remains throughout the year. So, in honor of Halloween, let’s look at a few whacky scholarships that reward those who keep the spirit of Halloween alive year-round.
Are you a fan of Star Trek? Planning to go to this year’s Halloween party as Spock, Captain Kirk or a Klingon? Well, if you live and breathe all things related to Star Trek, you may just win a scholarship for college too! The Kor Memorial Scholarship provides a $500 award to an international or U.S. undergraduate or graduate student that is completing a degree in language study (including Klingon). Ever heard of this old adage?: Don’t judge a book by its cover. This quote holds true in the world of scholarships. Not all scholarships require you to have an astronomical GPA or numerous hours of community service. Sometimes, all it takes to win free money for college is creativity to make a prom dress out of duct tape or a skill for playing marbles. So, don’t give up on your search for funding your educational goals. Explore these wacky scholarships below. You could be the next winner!
1. Tall Clubs International Scholarship – Too tall? I doubt it. To qualify for this scholarship, you must be a male 6’ 2” or taller or a female 5’ 10” or taller. Who said growing up was a bad thing?
2. Potato Industry Scholarship – The National Potato Council gives one deserving graduate student a $5,000 scholarship. You must be pursuing advanced studies in Agribusiness to enhance the potato industry. Read the rest of this entry »
