U.S. students who are current high school seniors and have completed 50 or more hours of community service during high school are eligible for this award. Students must be the sons or daughters of veterans who served in the armed forces during the eligiblity dates for membership in the American Legion. The parent must have served in WWI, WWII, the Korean War, Vietnam War, Granada Conflict, Panama Conflict, or Desert Storm/Desert Shield.

One $3,500 scholarship, one $3,000 scholarship and one $2,500 scholarship will be awarded in each division of the American Legion Auxiliary. All scholarships are awarded on an annual basis and are non-renewable. The scholarship must be used within 24 months of the date the winner receives notification by national headquarters. Half of the award will be paid directly to the school for the first semester upon notification from the school that the student has registered. The balance of the award will be paid to the school upon notification from the school that the student has registered for the second semester.
