Is a new semester of college right around the corner? If so, many college-bound students are going to be participating in college orientation. Some colleges send their students invitations to orientation, while others leave it up to the students to register for their orientation sessions. Make sure you know what you need to do to attend your school's orientation!

Orientation will give you the opportunity to tour the campus, learn more about the school's academic standards, regulations and policies, and attend special sessions to find out what academic and support services are available to you. You may also be able to register for your classes, set up your university email account, and purchase your parking decal, student ID, and books. You should also be prepared to take a test or two; most colleges require new students to take placement tests for math and English.

If possible, parents should accompany their students to college orientation. Orientation can be somewhat overwhelming for incoming students. New faces, new places, new requirements and a bewildering language of scantrons and syllabi...a parent's support and encouragement are crucial at this time. During orientation, not only can parents get answers to their many college-related questions, they also can get a feel for the environment in which their students will be living.

Orientation is a great way for you and your parents to become more familiar with your school and will prepare you for the upcoming school year. It is an experience you do not want to miss!
