This award is available for U.S. graduating high school seniors who are of African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American descent. Students must have a cumulative, unweighted grade point average of 3.3 or higher on a 4.0 scale and must meet the federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria.

Individuals selected as Gates Millennium Scholars will receive funds in an amount to be allocated by the Gates Millennium Scholars Program based on financial need. The scholarship will cover undergraduate program costs and will be based on the cost of tuition, fees, books, and living expenses, as well as the availability of grants and other scholarships reported on the submitted financial aid award letter. Continuing GMS Scholars may request funding for a graduate degree program in one of the following discipline areas: education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science.
