This award is for U.S. high school students in grades nine through twelve. To enter, students must write an essay addressing the topic listed on the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Library Foundation website.

The first-place winner receives $5,000 and is invited to the Kennedy Library in May to accept his/her award. The second-place winner receives $1,000. Up to five remaining finalists each receive $500. The nominating teacher of the first-place winner will be invited to the Kennedy Library in May to receive the John F. Kennedy Public Service Grant in the amount of $500 for school projects encouraging student leadership and civic engagement. All winners receive a hardcover copy of John F. Kennedy's 'Profiles in Courage' book. All awards are offered annually and are non-renewable. All participants will receive a certificate of participation.
