 2013 Winner

“Have you ever volunteered, done community service, or helped others in a way that changed the world for the better? If not, what would you do in the future to make a difference? Explain how your good deed positively contributed (or will contribute) to society?”

Mimi L.

Two words. Infinite meaning. “Thank you.” There’s something about those words that after mornings spent dragging myself out of bed, sacrificing much-needed sleep, a simple “thank you” is enough to make it all worth it. And it’s those two words that have driven me – and thousands like me – to serve my community. However, out of all the events I have volunteered at, the one that has impacted me the most is GLIDE.

GLIDE aims to break cycles of poverty by providing meals to San Francisco’s poor and hungry. As a volunteer, I am given the opportunity to witness the simple happiness that arises from something I’m so used to taking for granted – a hot meal. Through serving breakfast and lunch as well as bagging food to be taken to other parts of the city, I am given the satisfaction that every time I step into that place bustling with activity and filled with such busy happy warmth, even an everyday person like me can make a positive difference in someone else’s life.

As said in the scientific theory known as the butterfly effect, something so small as the fluttering of a butterfly’s wings can spark a chain of events that can revolutionize the entire world. Though that theory may be slightly overstated, I believe that as a single person helps another, an individual life is changed; as a thousand people help thousands more, society itself is changed, for the better. That is the power of volunteering.
